GNC OF SA was founded in 1904 by A.A.S. le Fleur I (1867-1941) following his release from jail. Convicted for sedition by die Cape Colonial government in East Griqualand in 1898 and was imprisoned at both the Breakwater Prison in Cape Town and Robben Island. Persecuted by the colonial ‘authorities’ for the remainder of his life, Paramount Chief Le Fleur I gathered, not only his followers, but also the majority of self-identifying Griqua throughout South Africa and re-organises them by means of regular Griqua conferences (hence the name of his organisation).
